Class visit

1 min read

With Christmas a few days away, Barry Bardone, Jefferson County Veterans Association adjutant, visited pupils at Wells Academy and discussed the topic, "Living Near the North Pole." Bardone served in the Air Force from 1965-69 and was stationed for a year at Thule Air Base in Greenland. Thule is the northernmost settlement near the North Pole. Pupils learned there are only two seasons that far north -- light and dark. A six-month season has daylight 24 hours a day. The other, complete darkness 24 hours a day. He informed pupils what to do in weather conditions reaching wind chills of below 100 degrees below zero. The presentation included showing photos of Eskimos, terrain and icebergs. Bardone's grandchildren, Joseph and Giada Maccariella, assisted by presenting the class with a thank-you card and allowing a rock secured from the North Pole to be passed around the classroom. The children then received a bag of goodies courtesy of JCVA.
