Brooke senior scores by organizing golf scramble

WELLSBURG -- Brooke High School golfer Owen Petrella found a way to help his team and a local park while completing his senior honors project.
Petrella organized a golf scramble that raised more than $5,000 for travel expenses, food and other costs incurred by the team when competing away from school.
He said a portion of the proceeds was given to Brooke Hills Park to show appreciation for the use of its golf course for practicing -- particularly its driving range.
Held in July at Highland Springs Golf Course, the golf scramble drew 32 four-member teams.
Petrella said he was pleased with the turnout and hopes the event can be continued, possibly by another senior.
Head golf coach Marshall Hone, who owns the golf course, said Petrella set about organizing various aspects of it, including securing 30 sponsors and donors toward food and other items for the event.
He created fliers to help promote it.
The son of Brian and Lori Petrella, he expressed thanks to the many who assisted and supported him.
While in his fourth year on the golf team, Petrella was one of four senior co-captains. Others included Nick Cipoletti, Mason Rees and Garrett Hornick.
Hone said it was an excellent year for the high school's golf program, with 20 students participating on either the male team or the newly-formed female team. A middle-school team is in the works, officials said.
Hone noted the high school hosted its first invitational golf tournament, in which eight teams participated.
