STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville Cultural Trust invited the public to participate in a Christmas Tree Decorating Contest at the Steubenville Nutcracker Village -- with a charitable twist.
More than 20 local businesses, religious organizations, nonprofit organizations, service clubs and individuals and families decorated live trees on historic Fourth Street, all competing for a cash prize to be awarded to their charity of choice.
Participants had three opportunities to win this season.
First, was the Sponsor's Choice. The Sponsor's Choice is a $500 award given to a decorated tree chosen by the Steubenville Cultural Trust and Ken and Becky Perkins of Tri-State Financial, the 2023 tree competition sponsor.
Second, was the People's Choice. The People's Choice is a $250 award given to a decorated tree chosen by popular vote through an online voting system.
And third, voters were able to leave a donation for the charity and tree of their choice. This was done through a $1 vote system, according to organizers.
Each decorated tree was awarded the $1 from a vote. The tree earning the most money at the end of the competition was the winner. For an entry to even be eligible to compete, it had to have received at least 10 votes, officials noted.
Ken and Becky Perkins of Tri-State Financial sponsored the purchase of 25 trees along with the prize money for the event. The Steubenville Cultural Trust set up and organized the event.
All trees were decorated prior to Thanksgiving and remained on display through New Year's Day.
This year, Marcella Miller decorated the winning Sponsor's Choice Tree. She was assisted by those in the Trinity Teramana Breast Cancer Support Group. Their $500 award went to the Trinity Breast Cancer Images Center.

"This was the third year for the Christmas tree competition and we hope it will continue to be a highlight of the Steubenville Nutcracker Village for many years to come," officials said.
