TORONTO -- The Toronto Sunrise Seniors began 2024 by welcoming Lynn Miller, Nancy Ramsey and Terry Ramsey as new members.
On Jan. 12, President Barbara Pritts called the meeting at Karaffa Recreation Center to order. A moment of silence was held in recognition of Jay Smith and Carolyn McCart, long time members who recently passed away.
Members enjoyed a covered dish which included meatloaf. Members thanked the kitchen committee, comprised of Rex and Betty Mossor, Frank Marino, Marlene Garrett, Brenda Fetty and David Devore.
Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Secretary Laura Sheets conducted the roll call of officers.
Thank-you notes were read from the families of Smith and McCart.
Social Secretary Marlene Garrett recognized individuals celebrating a birthday in January.
One person was mentioned under the health report and a card will be sent to them.
Pritts announced the February kitchen committee will consist of Bill and Mary Edwards, Bonnie Wilson, Bea Lytle and Paulette Reed.
Trips to Lancaster, Pa., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., were discussed. Those interested in attending can call Judy Bickler at (740) 282-6721 for information.
A survey was conducted asking the group about future trips that may be planned. Possible trips include an outing to the School of Performing Arts in Midland, Pa., in June and to the Ohio Star Theater in Amish country in August.
Mary Ann Landerfield was recognized as member of the month and presented with a small gift.
Landerfield informed those in attendance about the special election coming up in March.
She explained the levy regarding Jefferson County Senior Services aids those who are 60 and older in the county.
Landerfield stated Prime Time provides meals and transportation to senior citizens throughout the county and will not be able to continue doing so if the levy is not renewed.
Several members in attendance were wearing shirts in support of the issue, encouraging the renewal of the levy.
The activity for the evening was a competition featuring pictorial Rebus mind puzzles. These puzzles require "thinking outside of the box," members said. Devore was the winner of the competition.
The 50/50 drawing was won by Lucy Timko and Garrett.
Following brag time and the joke of the evening, the meeting was adjourned.
Members then played games of bingo, with the winners being, Nancy Bodrog, Ramsey, Landerfield, Pritts, Fetty, Hank Sheets, Mossor, Miller, and Mary Murphy.
The next meeting will be held at 5 p.m.Jan. 26 at Karaffa Recreation Center. New members are welcomed to join.
