NEW CUMBERLAND -- The Hancock County Community Educational Outreach Service met Feb. 7. President Becky Wiegers opened the meeting with the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and devotions.

The secretary's report provided by Wendy Backus was read and approved. Treasurer Janet Keller read her report, which was approved, as well.

Virginia Lawrence, health motivator, provided handouts to the members as she reported the club earned 135 participation points in last year's health program.

Purposeful reading Chairman Dinah Carpenter provided the reading numbers sent to the state reading committee. She noted Hancock County Community Educational Outreach Service volunteers had collectively read 814 books during 2023.

Sue Isner, continuing education chair and West Virginia University's Hancock County program assistant, is offering a monthly card-making class at the Hancock County Senior Services Center.

Isner stated the class will offer a free Healthy Meals for Two class at 1 p.m. March 21 at the center.

She then led this month's lesson about the town of Beverly, W.Va.

Having lived in that area, Isner was able to provide those in attendance with "a wonderful tour" of the little town with a huge history.

The remainder of the meeting was devoted to continuing plans to host the outreach's Morgantown-area meeting, which will take place May 4. The caterer's menu was discussed and decided upon, with plans being made for breakfast foods and goody bags, officials said.

Wiegers reported she was successful in engaging Fred Miller, a local author, to speak at the event.

The next regular meeting of the outreach service will be held at 11 a.m. March 6 at the Hancock County Senior Services Center, located on Gas Valley Road in New Cumberland. The title of the lesson will be, "The Bloom Room: Floral Design Basics."
