JVS collecting for Humane Society
BLOOMINGDALE -- Transition to Work students at the Jefferson County Joint Vocational School are showing their love for animals through their annual collection, which will benefit the Jefferson County Humane Society.
The program is accepting food, toys and cleaning supplies. TTW Instructor Christina Henderson said the event began Feb. 1 and runs until Wednesday, Valentine's Day. The items will be delivered to the Wintersville facility.
Among the cat and kitten supplies being accepted are dry kitten food, KMR powdered kitten milk replacer, canned kitten food, scratching posts, catnip, cat beds, non-clumping cat litter, Snuggle Safe heating discs, Nutri-Cal supplements and heating pads.
Dog and puppy supplies being requested include Xylitol-free peanut butter, canned pumpkin, hot dogs, dog treats, Kongs, Nylabones, slip leads and Kuranda beds.
Other supplies needed by the humane society include paper towels, high-efficiency laundry detergent, kitchen-sized garbage bags, Clorox bleach, Clorox Wipes and pill pockets for the shelter and clinic, while the office is in need of stamps and copy paper. Henderson began the event long ago, while working in Toronto. It has been a mainstay at the JVS for the past 15 years.
"It began because of my personal love of animals," she continued. "My animals have all been adopted from local pounds and humane societies and I realize it's very easy to connect with students through animals. We'll hopefully be taking the items on Valentine's Day. They get a multitude of donations at Christmas and may need to refill when Valentine's Day rolls around, so we get to show love with the animals." Fire department to hold fish fry
STEUBENVILLE -- The Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department will hold a fish fry beginning Friday. The fish fry will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through March 29, according to officials.
The menu consists of either a chicken, shrimp or fish dinner, $10; a fish sandwich, chicken tenders, a fish fillet or shrimp basket, $7 each; french fries, $2; macaroni and cheese or haluski, $3; and coleslaw, applesauce or water, $1.

Quinn AME Church events
STEUBENVILLE -- Quinn Memorial AME Church is moving forward in worship, prayer, study and fellowship.
Each Sunday in February, guest presenters will help to remember the past, recognize the current struggle and chart a course forward.
On Wednesday, the church will begin its noon-day Hour of Power Worship in honor of Ash Wednesday. The Rev. Clifton Kilpatrick of St. Paul AME Church in Zanesville, is expected to speak.
Quinn AME will focus on government, entrepreneurship and health advocacy on Sunday. Royal Mayo, Steubenville Fourth Ward councilman, will serve as a guest presenter. Others who were invited to speak include Pat Bailey, owner of Vontries Coutures; Brenda Ware, owner of Ms. B's Cafe; and Vanessa Palmer, health advocate for Tiffany Mobile Breast Van.
On Feb. 21, the Rev. Helen Burton, retired pastor at AME Church will speak.
Political advocacy and community will be the focus of the Feb. 25 service. Terri Jennings, an activist for the National Action Network; Asantewa Anyabwile, from the LaBelle Neighborhood Association; and the HBCU college tour are slated to serve a guest presenters.
The Rev. James Baber, pastor at Calvary Community Baptist Church, will be in attendance Feb. 28.
The following individuals are expected to address the church: The Rev. Melody Shaffer, Shaffer Chapel AME Church in McIntyre, March 6; the Rev. Calvin McLoyd Jr., Calvary Community Baptist Church, March 13; Elder Mark Gilliam, Second Chance Ministries, March 20; Evangelist Clarissa Speaker, Greater Zion Tabernacle, March 27; and the "Seven Last Words of Christ," March 29.
Free Throw Championship
WEIRTON -- Boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14 are invited to sign up for the Knights of Columbus's Free Throw Championship.
The event will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Joseph Grade School gymnasium. Sponsors of the event are the Knights of Columbus 3734 in Weirton.

Food pantry seeks volunteers for task
WEIRTON -- The Brooke Hancock Family Resource Network is in need of volunteers to assist in unloading and transporting food. The food is delivered by the Mountaineer Food Bank from the Weirton Salvation Army on Cove Road to the network's office, located at 1300 Potomac Ave. The help is needed at noon on Feb. 20. Free tutoring offered

Foster parent training
STEUBENVILLE - The Jefferson County Department of Job and Family Services, Children Services Division, will be offering foster care pre-placement classes for people interested in becoming foster or foster-to-adopt parents.
