MINGO JUNCTION -- Members of the St. Agnes Catholic Woman's Club met Jan 16, opening their first meeting of the year with a prayer. Following President Theresa Madden's tradition of chalking the door, members recited the chalking-the-door prayer together.
Dinner was then served by hostesses Jean Mazik, Mickey Barcalow and Kathy Flippo. Members held a business meeting after the meal, which began with Madden thanking the evening's hostesses. All officers were present, along with 17 of the group's members. The leadership commission recognized those with January birthdays, which included Donna Balzano, Rose Walsh, Rose Gampolo, Lorraine Zwrierzewicz, Diana Werkin and Theresa Jurasko. Jurasko was the only member on attendance and had the opportunity to select a gift.
During announcements, it was noted the Mingo Junction Knights of Columbus will hold its fish fry Friday. Workers and bakers are needed for the event, officials stated. A parish brunch to celebrate the Feast of St. Agnes and confirmation is scheduled to be held following the 10 a.m. Mass on Feb. 21. Members collected the supplies which are being donated to the Little Flowers.
Madden displayed two old booklets that had been found. She discussed the books, explaining one is about the transition of the Agnetian Club to the Catholic Woman's Club. The Agnetian Club began in 1943 and transitioned in 1957. The second book was about the dedication of the "new" St. Agnes School, which opened on Sept. 16, 1956. She pointed out the saying at the top of the agenda "Ora et Labora et Lude," which translates to "Pray and work and play." This is an expansion of St. Benedict's motto "Ora et Labora," she said.
The Rev. Jim Dunfee thanked the club for his Christmas gift and for all that was done for his mother's funeral. He announced that the rite of election will take place Feb. 18 at St. Agnes. This year there will be no luncheon. A reception will be held afterward, which will include cookies and perhaps a vegetable tray.
Flippo presented the door prize to Debbie Riccardo, who won the "Did you ever ..." activity.
Dorothy Mazik won the 50/50 drawing, donating it to the club.
The next meeting will be held Feb. 20. Rose Chappano, Eileen Moody, Werkin and Jurasko will be the hostesses. Chappano will serve as the door prize curator.
