STEUBENVILLE — Early childhood registration will soon be getting underway for those in the Steubenville City School District.

Preschoolers and kindergarteners entering East Garfield Elementary, McKinley STEM Academy, Pugliese West Elementary and Wells Academy for the 2024-25 school years will have the opportunity to be registered from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. between Feb. 26 and March 1.

To attend preschool, a child must be 3 years of age on or before Aug. 1 and be no older than 5. Kindergarteners must be 5 on or before that Aug. 1. A birth certificate, Social Security number and record of immunizations are required of all children who are entering for the first time. Those enrolling in preschool must present a physician’s medical statement and dentist’s statement, officials stated. Steubenville City Schools provides free screenings at its four buildings as part of the Child Find program.

District officials said it offers the best choices for preschool and kindergarten children. Preschoolers participate in the Success for All program beginning their first day and continuing into grade school. They will get to expand their vocabulary, as well as build math, science, art, music and interpersonal skills.

The day consists of much more than pencil-and-paper activities, officials commented. Children listen to stories, engage in make-believe, play games, sing songs and more.

Every preschooler will come to know Curiosity Cat, Chilly the Penguin and Squeaky the Squirrel as they learn about concepts and skills which helps them converse, imagine and discover.

Kindergarten students experience activities involving interaction and partner-work. This helps build relationships and social skills to prepare them for first grade. Interactive whiteboard activities enhance learning along with Story Telling and Retelling lessons.

Kinderoo and Alex the Ape will assist with their newly-acquired skills, advancing them to be a “cool kid.”

The WonderGarten program is second-to-none and offers children with late birthdays a developmentally-appropriate curriculum, along with extra time so they are fully prepared for kindergarten.

Having this delayed enrollment, 4- and 5-year-olds receive the attention and nurturing they need to build foundational skills that will help them transition into kindergarten the following year, officials said.
