WEIRTON -- The Weirton Lions Club met to discuss upcoming activities, stating spring and summer are going to be a busy time for members.
In April, an election of officers will be held. The Flags for Heroes Program entails displaying American flags at war memorial sites for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Veterans Day. Those interested in sponsoring a flag for a veteran or current military person can contact Secretary Bernice Pitcock at bpit@comcast.net.
The second-annual Heart of a Lion Dinner will be held May 21 at Giovanni's Restaurant. This recognition is given to a Weirton-area resident who exemplifies the Lion's motto of "we serve," -- even though they are not a Lion.
The club will be sponsoring three garden plots this planting season at the Weirton Christian Center's Community Garden. Club members are scheduled to care for the plots and donate the produce to local food pantries and other groups as part of the Lions work for the environment and hunger issues.
The Lions continue to collect used glasses and hearing aids for recycling. Collection boxes are available at following locations: Weirton Medical Center's main lobby; Ohio Valley Vision Center, American Way; Lee Eye Center, Penco Road; Sacred Heart of Mary Church vestibule; and the Mary H. Weir Library.
The club noted it is continuing to assist Weirton-area residents with their eye exams and glasses purchases.
Club officials stated the group is maintaining two Little Libraries housing books and magazines in the city.
Those in the Weirton Lions stated they are "busy individuals and we are always looking for new members to help us provide needed services to the Weirton area."
The club recently inducted six new members, commenting they are "thrilled to have more hands to serve." Those interested in learning about the Lions can contact President John Porco or Pitcock about joining.
