DAR members learn about Beatty Park

WEIRTON -- Members of the Fort Steuben Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met at Giovanni's Restaurant in Weirton March 9.

The meeting was called to order by Regent Mary Ann Jesse. The invocation and blessing were given by Nancy Valles.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by First Vice Regent Jeanne Vega followed by Sue Davidson, second vice regent, leading in the American's Creed. Singing of the national anthem was led by Tammy Kotyk.

Non-vaccinated members were reminded to wear a mask to maintain social distancing at meetings. Masks are to be worn except when eating or addressing the group. Members also were asked to wear name tags during each meeting. 

Registrar Tracey Dysert introduced prospective member Sheryl Hendricks to the group, noting Kathleen Marotta is another new, prospective member.

Lunch was then served.

Treasurer Patti D'Aurora introduced this month's presenter, Flora VerStratten-Merrin from the Jefferson County Genealogical Society. 

VerStratten-Merrin is writing a book entitled, "The History of Beatty Park." Through hard work and dedication, she has secured many grants which have been used in the restoration of Beatty Park, officials said. While performing the restoration, many historic structures have been discovered on site, including enormous fossils. Local students taking field trips to Beatty Park have been able to view the finds as they learn about the park's history.

During the business meeting, Secretary Vickie Joseph read the minutes of the previous meeting and D'Aurora gave the treasurer's report. Committee reports entailed America 250 Chairman Francine Hauldren reporting the chapter received a certificate of participation in the 250th re-enactment of the Boston Tea Party, held Dec. 16.

Valles, who serves as Junior American Citizens chairman, informed members there were 41 chapter winners, 25 first-place state winners and 16 first-place division winners. 

"We are now waiting for the judging on the national level," Valles said.

The committee for veterans' affairs and project patriotism spoke to members, with Jesse stating there is a wish list for veterans at Walter Reed Army hospital.

Under old business, members discussed ideas for the Fort Steuben Chapter's nutcracker. Ideas were the Madonna of the Trail and a Revolutionary Era woman with a spinning wheel. Members were asked to bring photos of their ideas to the next meeting.

Members continued discussing a meeting place for next year, with suggestions including Toronto, Steubenville and Weirton. Members requested there be two options available for meals served during meetings and stressed the importance of a private meeting space with Wi-Fi access. Davidson will explore available options and report back to the chapter.

Members were again asked to report their Service to America hours. Those in attendance agreed with the idea to change the format of the April Sale, which will now be an auction-type sale. Dysert agreed to take charge of the event. Members were asked to bring one item to be auctioned, with proceeds from benefiting the chapter's scholarship fund.

Under new business, Dysert suggested selling T-shirts as another fundraiser so when working on a public project, members could wear their shirts and increase chapter visibility to the community. This idea was tabled for discussion until the next meeting.

Under the sunshine report, prayers were said for Jesse, Jo Ann Morrison, Margaret Kotyk, McCall Leamer, Jonell Meador and Janet Rymer. Prayers were said for the Husband of a Daughter of the American Revolution, including Lou Valles, Donnie Vega and Dan Rymer. 

Members were asked to send cards or call those who are on the sunshine report.

The next meeting will be held at noon Saturday at Giovanni's Restaurant.

Valles gave the benediction and the meeting was adjourned.
