Belmont College
ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- For nearly 30 years, students from area schools have displayed hundreds of science projects at Belmont College.
And once again, the halls were filled with scientific inquiry.
This year, 47 students from four local schools competed in the 2024 District 16 Science Fair at the college's main campus.
Participating schools included Bishop John King Mussio School, Coshocton County Home School, East Richland Christian School and Shenandoah schools.
Held March 23, the event was the second in-person science fair held on campus since 2019.
The event featured 10 teams of judges.
The District 16 Science Fair is for students who participated in and achieved superior scores in their school fairs or who have been selected by their teachers as having an exceptional project, officials commented.
The projects were judged yet again by more rigorous standards.
Top projects were recognized and rewarded with superior ratings and special awards that were sponsored by a variety of donors, organizers explained.
The top students were selected to represent District 16 at the state-level competition at Ohio State University.
The 2024 State Science Day was a virtual event held April 19.
The following local students from Bishop John King Mussio School received a superior score and were eligible to represent the state science day: Brynlee Benner, Hollis Chaney, Maria Gessler, Vanessa Grafe, Sophia Leonard, Mason Saggio and Delia Wetherell.
Wetherell, an eighth-grade student, received the Ohio Tuition Trust Authority Scholarship and the District 16 Science Fair Committee Excellence in Science Award for her project titled, "What Form of Insulation is Most Effective For a Coat?"
Benner and Grafe received recognitions from the Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh.
Saggio received the M.J. Piccin Memorial Award from Belmont College, sponsored by Margaret Piccin.
The following students received the Belmont College Award for Excellence: Chaney, behavioral and social sciences; Gessler, medical science; and Leonard, behavioral and social sciences.
Northeast Ohio Medical University College
STEUBENVILLE -- Steubenville's Calvin Jackson was among the 126 Northeast Ohio Medical University College of Medicine students to learn their medical residency match during a celebration for National Residency Match Day.
The celebration took place March 15.
A residency match is a culmination of four years of hard work and dedication to train to become a physician and transformative leader in the field of medicine.
Jackson learned they will be serving an emergency medicine residency at Case Western and University hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.
Jackson is currently a fourth-year medicine student.
He will move on to their residency following graduation. A commencement celebration was held Saturday.
Mount Union University
CADIZ -- McKayla Dunkle, a resident of Cadiz, has been awarded the Robert E. Hillier Family Scholarship.
The gift was presented to Dunkle during the 2024 Mount Union Senior Recognition and Honors Convocation.
This award recognizes an outstanding student in the School of Business as a result of the investment strategies of the Student Investment Team.
The event honors graduating seniors and underclass students who excel academically.
It honors students who display excellent leadership skills and who have shown dedication to the university and community performing outstanding community service initiatives.
