STEUBENVILLE -- A week of school spirit activities entitled "Tropic Like it's Hot," has begun at Harding Middle School. And the community is being invited to participate.
School social worker Shay Greiner explained staff and 785 students in grades 5-8 are taking part in various activities this week to celebrate the end of state testing and the start of Maymester before the school year winds to a close.
"It's something we've never done before and it's fun," Greiner said. "It's a community-connections project and several students will visit local businesses with fliers and ask if they will participate and post pictures on our Facebook page."
The tropical theme began Monday with "Color Wars." Students wore neon colors pertaining to grade, including yellow for fifth grade, green for sixth, pink for seventh and blue for eighth. On Tuesday, everyone wore sunglasses to participate in the "Throw Some Shade," activity.
Today, teachers will dress as students and students are dressing like teachers.
Students will celebrate being a "Beach Bum" on Thursday, dressing in pajamas, their favorite comfy clothes or band merchandise. And "Luau Day" will conclude the week, Friday. Hawaiian shirts, summer tees, flip flops and hats are permitted to be worn, officials commented.
"It's all in the name of fun, community engagement and student morale," Greiner concluded.
