CONNORVILLE -- Tech-savvy teens will put their STEM knowledge to the test during the seventh-annual Sea, Air and Land Challenge at Buckeye Local High School Friday. Participating teams are BLHS, Martins Ferry and Wheeling Central.

Arrivals begin at 8 a.m., a speaker will present at 9 a.m. and two rounds of competitions take place at 9:40 a.m. and 11:20 a.m. The event is sponsored by the Penn State University Electro-Optics Center and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency.

Organizer Jeff Merrill explained students operate remote-controlled robots they designed and complete timed tasks while being viewed by judges.

Challenges take place in the school's gymnasiums and outdoors. Events are held underwater, on an obstacle course and air activities. Awards are held at 12:40 p.m.

"Buckeye Local has hosted the competition since 2018," Merrill said. "The purpose is for students to build either a land robot, underwater ROV or a drone and compete given a series of parameters put forth by our sponsors to simulate real-world situations.
