Juneteenth celebrations planned
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Ecumenical Council will sponsor two days of Juneteenth celebrations.
This year's theme will be "First Pick: Honoring Weirton's Past," a tribute to professional athletes from Weirton.
A Juneteenth revival service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Mount Olive Baptist Church, located at Weir Avenue and Kessel Street in Weirton. The revivalist will be the Rev. Samuel Ware, pastor of St. Peters AME Church.
The celebration continues at 11 a.m. Saturday as activities in honor of Juneteenth will take place at the Weirton Event Center, located at 3322 East St. in Weirton. The event will feature a bounce house, arts and crafts and entertainment by rapper 180's Babies, vocalist Linda Ross Brown, vocalist ReKonception, a praise dance by Tina Hines, vocalist Melanye Wares and the WEC choir.
Master of ceremonies will be Larry Branham. A Weirton pro-athletes presentation also will be held.
Sponsors include the City of Weirton, Christ the King Church, Weirton Ecumenical Council, Morning Star Baptist Church, Mount Olive Baptist Church, Shiloh Apostolic Faith Assembly and St. Peters AME Church.
