Garden show’s ‘Around the World in Flowers’

WINTERSVILLE -- Jefferson County's Woodland Garden Club held its annual Garden Show July 11. This year's theme was "Around the World in Flowers." There were 21 entries submitted, with the show having five categories in which participants could enter: Walking on the beach in Australia, To Paris with Love, Visiting Washington, D.C., Under the Sea in Hawaii and Golden Gate Bridge. The Best of Show went to Carla Gasser, with her Golden Gate Bridge satellitic design in two containers.
Class No. 1, Walking on the Beach in Australia, featured a miniature design no larger than 5 inches in any direction, officials explained. The top finishers included, Cherry Kough, first; Sarah Grafton, second; Gasser, third; and Norma Harris, fourth.
Class No. 2 was To Paris with Love, a traditional horizontal design. Top finishers were: Gasser, first; Susan Tatar, second; Kough, third; and Grafton, fourth.
Visiting Washington, D.C., used a creative duo design -- having two completely different arrangements in the same vase and separated with a divider. The back design is not permitted to be seen from the front, or vice versa.
Placements for group 3A were: Kough, first; Grafton, second; Bernadine Sliva, third; and Joyce Griffin, fourth. Officials noted Harris also had an entry in this category.
Placements for 3B were: Kough, first; Grafton, second; Griffin, third; and Sliva, fourth. Harris had an entry in this category, as well, officials commented.
Under the Sea in Hawaii was class No. 4. A creative underwater design was created using one or more containers with some components placed under water. Receiving first was Kough. Granton obtained second; Gasser, third; and Elaine Wukelic, fourth.
Class No. 5 was the Golden Gate Bridge, a satellitic design of two containers with a curved line connecting both containers, officials explained. Top finishers were: Gasser, first; Tater, second; Kough, third; and Grafton, fourth.
Entries and extra flowers were collected by Kim Slivka, who donated the blossoms to Valley Hospice. Nine arrangements and some of the extra flowers also were taken to Liza's Place Care Center South, located in Oglebay. Center officials expressed their appreciation, noting the flowers brightened the day of their patients.
"We, as a Garden Club, were very happy to donate the arrangements to the patients at the center," Grafton stated.
The Ohio Association of Garden Clubs will hold its 2024 convention Aug. 26-28 at Maumee Bay State Park Lodge in Oregon, Ohio. The 2024 OAGC Convention Flower Show will be held, with this year's Artistic Flower Show entitled, "It's the Little Things." In addition to artistic flowers, horticulture will be featured.
