Jefferson County Democrats attend national convention

LORAINE — The Federated Democratic Women of Jefferson County sent five of its members to the National Democratic Women’s 53rd-annual convention in Loraine from June 5-8.

Eileen Krupinski, past president of Ohio; Louise Holliday, second vice president of Ohio; Kathy Antinone, regional vice president; Maureen Howard, Jefferson County Democratic party vice chair; and member Patricia Butler attended the event.

Twenty-one states along with Puerto Rico were represented at the convention.

Officials stated several speakers were on hand to present talks on topics of interest to the country.

The convention’s theme was, “Empowering Women from State to State.”

Topics the women said were of importance to them included: Education, voter rights, women’s health, affordable childcare, encouraging women to run for office and preserving democracy.

Virgie Rollins of Michigan and Joanne Sullivan of Connecticut were voted to the Democratic National Committee by those in attendance.

A video presentation was given by Vice President Kamala Harris.

Speakers included Christine Pelosi, daughter of Nancy Pelosi, former speaker of the house; Nina Turner, state sen.; Andre Washington, vice chair of the Ohio Democratic party; Judge Terri Jameson and California resident Alicia Cole, a health care advocate known for her role on “Beverly Hills 90210.” The Jefferson County women stated they “left with a renewed enthusiasm to save our democracy.”
