The Jefferson County Veterans Association will hold its annual picnic from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. July 20 at shelters one, two and three in Smithfield Park. The event is free to attend and will be held rain or shine, officials stated. Food will include hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken, sub sandwiches, potato salad, various side dishes, desserts and beverages. The national anthem will be sung by Thomas Graham. The Tri-State Community Band will perform. Attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie of other veterans, family and friends. To commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, which took place in June 1944, the association will conduct drawings for the chance to win one of two gold-plated, proof coins. One holds sand from Normandy Beach and the other recognizes landing on Omaha Beach. Troops storming the beaches are shown on the opposite side of the coin.
