BLOOMINGDALE -- The Jefferson County Joint Vocational School had its largest turnout in years.
Incoming juniors and seniors toured the JVS building on Aug. 20 for the school's annual orientation. Approximately 420 juniors and seniors are attending the JVS this year.
New and returning students attended the orientation to get acclimated or reacquainted with the surroundings. Classes began for juniors Aug. 21, with seniors beginning a day later.
Students and family members toured classrooms and labs, met with teachers, received Chromebooks, were given T-shirts and schedules and learned about graduation requirements, work-based learning and fees. Students were then entered into a drawing to win prizes.
Superintendent Todd Phillipson said the event went very well, adding it was the largest attendance the school has had in years.
"We're excited to get going and get our students started in school and the labs," Phillipson said.
The expanse of programs being offered has brought about more interest in career-tech education, officials said. The noted there are 157 seniors and 262 juniors currently enrolled.
Students expressed their excitement and nervousness about the new year, but look forward to learning the trades offered.
Among the 16 programs are auto collision, auto service technology, animal science, carpentry, computer networking, cosmetology, criminal justice, culinary arts, early childhood education, electrical trades, health technologies, heavy equipment operation, multimedia and design, power mechanics, Transition to Work and welding.
