STEUBENVILLE -- September is Library Card Signup Month.
And, those at the Public Library of Steubenville and Jefferson County explained just how helpful a library card can be.
"Whether you're upgrading your skills, scouting for knowledge and information or connecting with other readers, a library card is your key to a variety of resources," library officials stated.
Those who possess a library card are able to participate in a variety of activities and events at their local library.
Creativity in building and programming can be sparked when using the Makerspace, located at the Schiappa branch. On-hand and online databases allow residents the opportunity to explore new stories and adventure books.
Or, if you are traveling, a library card can assist in fueling one's mind by checking out books, e-books, audiobooks and museum passes, officials commented.
Card holders can save on a new pair of shoes when they show their card at Shoe Sensations of Steubenville. Throughout September, customers will receive a 20 percent discount by showing their card at the store. Restrictions apply.
Beginning Sept. 3 and running through Oct. 5, the library will celebrate Smokey Bear's 80th birthday with a fire safety challenge.
Children 12 and younger can take a fire safety pledge and will be entered into a drawing where one winner will be selected on Oct. 9, which recognizes Fire Prevention Day.
The library will hold a magical "Journey through Middle Earth," event during the First Fridays on Fourth celebration in September.
Participants will discover Middle Earth from "Lord of the Rings," brought to life by stepping into a Hobbit Hole -- a 40-foot-long interactive art display. They will uncover a secret passage to find the giant Ent and will "dare to explore Smaug's Cave."
The event takes place from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Sept. 6 on Fourth Street in downtown Steubenville.
Library officials also announced a new StoryWalk in Beatty Park. The story is entitled "Neil Plants a Tree," by Anne Wynter and Daniel Myares.
Once children have completed the reading of the story, they can pick up their prize at the Main Library.
The following activities and events have been announced for library branches throughout the county.

Teens: Pick up a grab-and-go DIY journal beginning Sept. 3, while supplies last. Each bag contains the supplies needed to make a leather-bound journal for going back to school.
Adults: Tai Chi is practiced at 10 a.m. every Thursday. Wear comfortable clothing and follow along using slow, intentional movements with instructor Mike Turrentine. Spacing is on a first-come, first-served basis.
Children: Pick up a grab-and-go craft to make a library card holder. The bags are available beginning Sept. 4, while supplies last.

Story Time can be done at home whenever it is convenient. On Sept. 3, children can pick up a grab-and-go bag containing the stories "Two Cool Cows," by Toby Speed and "Storm Is Coming," by Heather Tekavec. An activity will be included.
The activity Play and Learn the Alphabet will take place at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 5. The class is for parents and their children between the ages of 2 and 6. Register to attend.

Teens: It's game night for Children between the ages of 11-17 can participate in Game Night, to be held from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 4. Play video games on XBox, Nintendo Switch and Playstation 3 or 4. Register to attend.
