Weir holds 45th reunion event

WEIRTON — Those graduating in the Class of 1979 from Weir High School marked their 45th anniversary of the event with a special reunion, held Aug. 2-3 at Undo’s restaurant inside the Holiday Inn in Weirton.
The reunion’s co-chairs were Laurie Gaston Dankovchik and Melanie Donofe, who helped organize the event. Reunion committee members included, Gregory Cain, Linda Smith Brown, Twila Weekley Cumberledge, Denise Truax Jones, Allison Knight, Sheryl Wallace Linkesh, Vicky Gaston Malone, April Gates Merico, Patty Pulice Rice, Emily Barnabei Roman, Janet Platt Scenna, Mary Wright Shepherd, Barbara Tunanidis, Ken Uselton, Cindy Valentne West and Janet Zdybicki Ridgway.
The reunion got underway Aug. 2, beginning with an icebreaker. Classmates reminisced about memorable times during their years at Weir High. There were 68 graduates from the Class of ’79 in attendance for the icebreaker. Classmates traveled from Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, Kentucky, Illinois, California, Virginia, South Carolina, North Carolina and West Virginia for the event.
The evening’s 50/50 drawing was won by Patrick Kelley, organizers announced.
The celebration held Aug. 3 was in the theme of “Aging Like A Fine Wine.” Organizers and committee members decorated in the colors of red, white and blue. A large number of classmates dressed in the theme’s colors. Attending the event were 62 classmates and 30 guests. The evening began with a dinner and dancing. Dan Enich provided the introduction, welcoming those who made the trip to reunite with one another.
Following Enich, April Gats Merico paid tribute to honor the 60 classmates who have died since graduation. The invocation was given by Dankovchik and Lisa Williams Baldwin led in the singing of the alma mater. A 50/50 drawing was won by Sheryl Wallace Linkesh. Attendees participated in a silent auction, won by Ken Uselton, and a Chinese auction,which featured approximately 40 items that were donated by class members.
The money raised will be used toward the next reunion, organizers said. Past class reunion pictures were on display, along with a memorial tree with pictures of classmates who have died. Disc jockey Chelsea provided dancing music and a photo booth allowed new memories to be made, cap off the evening.
The 50th reunion will be held in 2029.
