Community Yard Sale postponed
STEUBENVILLE -- The date of the United Way of Jefferson County Community Yard Sale has been changed, according to officials. Originally set for Saturday, the yard sale will now take place in the Eastern Gateway Community College parking lot on Sept. 14. For information, call (740) 284-9000.
Finley Church to present trumpeter
STEUBENVILLE -- Trumpeter Chiz Rider will be in concert at Finley Church at 6 p.m. Saturday at the church. Rider's trumpet ministry appeals to people of all ages, performing songs such as "Amazing Grace," which he played during a Billy Graham crusade. These high-energy, contemporary songs are played at youth concerts, in which Rider's music and ministry are reaching people for Christ, organizers stated.
Having been in ministry for more than 37 years, Rider said he has been blessed to have performed with such popular Christian artists as Carman, Margaret Becker, D.C. Talk, Newsboys, Cindy Morgan, Larnell Harris and Michael W. Smith.
Rider has performed numerous times at the Crystal Cathedral and has played for several presidents and members of Congress. He also performed for the Pennsylvania and West Virginia Special Olympics opening ceremonies. He is 90 percent self-taught, having begun at a young age by imitating songs he heard on the radio. His musical style embodies a jazz and pop sound that has been influenced by jazz musicians Wynton and Branford Marsalis, Maynard Ferguson, Louis Armstrong and Jon Faddis. Finley Church, located on Lincoln Avenue, announced the public in invited to attend this special evening of uplifting music.
FBI to present Internet safety program
WELLSBURG -- A representative of the FBI's Pittsburgh office will discuss the latest technology being used to target youth and talk about protection from online predators, during two sessions to be held Monday at Brooke High School.
The first discussion will be held at 6 p.m. and geared toward parents. The second session begins at 7 p.m. and will be for area youth. Attendees must pre-register for the free programs by visiting forms.fbi.gov/fbi-community-awareness-presentation-online-safety-starts-with-you/view. The programs are being presented in cooperation with the Brooke County Family Support Center, Brooke County Schools, Upper Ohio Valley Sexual Assault Help Center and Comfort House Child Advocacy Center.
Class of '59 to hold luncheon
STEUBENVILLE -- The Steubenville High School Class of 1959 held its monthly luncheon on Aug. 14. There were 18 classmates in attendance. The group welcomed Charles Fields, Lionel Lindsay and B.J. Moore, who traveled from Wooster to attend. Terry Seese provided the birthday cake for the gathering. Well wishes were extended to those having an August birthday. The Class of '59 will hold its September luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Froehlich's Classic Corner. To make a reservation, call (740) 219-2234.
Seven Ranges to meet
WINTERSVILLE -- The Seven Ranges Joint Fire District Trustees will hold its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the 911 complex, located at 300 Airport Road in Wintersville.
Author center of science program
WELLSBURG -- Children in preschool through fifth grade will have the opportunity to meet Diana Perry, author of "The Weather by Heather," from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Brooke County Public Library. Children can also take part in science experiments related to the weather.
A resident of Reynoldsburg, Perry has written for a variety of regional and national publications, including the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. She has promoted her books by touring nationally. Steubenville retirees discuss meetings
WEIRTON -- Steubenville City Schools Retirees met for lunch at Dee Jay's BBQ Ribs and Grille Aug. 8. Those in attendance signed cards for members who are ill. A collection was begun for the group's Christmas charity, which will help needy adults. The collection will continue until December. Those wishing to contribute can do so at one of the retirees' upcoming lunches or give the money to Linda Holub or Becky Bryan.
The next luncheon will be held Sept. 12 at Capraro's Restaurant and Lounge in Hopedale. The October lunch will take place at Theo Yianni's and November's luncheon will be held at Abdalla's Tavern and Grill. Officials stated plans for December include getting together for a dinner rather than lunch. Members are planning to hold the event at Pastaio's. To be placed on the call list, contact Holub or simply show up at the lunches, which begin at 12:30 p.m.
Class of '74 to hold reunion
WEIRTON -- The Weirton Madonna High School Class of 1974 will hold its 50th reunion from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 19 at Al's Community Room, formerly the Serbian Cultural Center, located in the Lauttamus Communications and Security building at 1000 Colliers Way.
A class picture will be taken at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will be catered by Caroline Magnone.
Classmates are invited to attend a Mass at 4 p.m. Oct. 19 at St. Joseph the Worker Parish. An icebreaker will be held at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at Mario's Restaurant and Lounge in Weirton. Dress will be casual. There will be a cash bar available. Classmates are asked to RSVP by Sept. 15.
