Tour of Rockshelter set for Saturday
PITTSBURGH — Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village, part of the Sen. John Heinz History Center family of museums, will host a special tour of the Rockshelter at 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Rockshelter is the oldest site of human habitation in North American. The behind-the-scenes tour will be led by archaeologist Diane Beynon Landers, an original member of James Adovasio’s team that achieved international acclaim with their excavation of the Rockshelter in 1973-74.
The tour will include a presentation by Landers, who will reveal the story of the massive rock overhang that provided shelter to the region’s earliest inhabitants more than 19,000 years ago.
Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the Rockshelter with one of the original experts who uncovered its prehistoric secrets.
The tour is included with regular admission and includes access to the entire Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Historic Village site throughout the day.

4-H to hold fall soup fundraiser
SMITHFIELD–The 4-H Varieties will host its annual soup fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds kitchen in Smithfield.
Patrons will get to choose from 10 different homemade soups, cornbread and a drink for the cost of $10 for adults and $5 for children’s meals. Children’s meals will include a hot dog, small soup, juice and a Rice Krispies treat. Children will have the opportunity to visit a tattoo booth set up for them while there, officials noted.
Homemade baked goods also will be available for sale. Soups can be purchased for takeout, as well.
There will be a variety of baskets to be given away in a silent auction that will be a part of the special fall event. The Jefferson County Humane Society will be on site in the pavilion area. Officials will have adoptable pets at the event for those interested in adopting an animal in need.
Spaghetti fundraiser set for church
STEUBENVILLE–Rosemont Chapel, located on the corner of Williams Boulevard and Goulds Road in Steubenville, will hold a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Sept. 21.
The menu will consist of spaghetti with meat sauce, salad, bread and a beverage at the cost of $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under.

Nonprofit looking for Thanksgiving help
WEIRTON — The Community Bread Basket is looking for the public’s help in donating once again toward the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons.
Residents are being asked to donate $15 to help the nonprofit agency purchase items for its holiday food baskets. Items are not limited to turkeys, hams, boxed and canned foods, officials stated.
Donors can also help by purchasing a gift card or turkey and dropping it off at the organization, located at 3545 Pennsylvania Ave. in the rear of the building. Organizers said they are appreciative for the community’s support.

Women of Faith discuss helping others
TORONTO — The Toronto Women of Faith met Aug. 20 at the Last Resort restaurant in Toronto.
Karen Thorton welcomed members in attendance and brought the meeting to order.
The group held a moment of silence to remember Charlene Rhoades and Janet LeMaster, two of its long-time members, who died. Also remembered, was Thorton’s father, who died last week.
It was announced member Betty Mossor is in the hospital, following a fall. Members asked for prayers for Mossor in her recovery.
A discussion was held on what the Women of Faith group could do to help others.
Officials noted last month’s donations for the Toronto Food Pantry and the backpacks and pieces of luggage given to the children placed in the foster care system, were great successes. Members were thanked for their assistance with the projects.
During September, members decided to help those at the Aim Women’s Center. It was stated the group would provide the nonprofit agency with diapers and baby wipes to help mothers in need.
Those in the group were asked to bring their donations for the center to the next meeting, scheduled for 1 p.m. Sept. 17 at the First Church of the Nazarene in Toronto. Devotions will be held by Carolyn McEwen and dessert will be provided by Susette Hannan.
Karen Martin gave a report on the club’s benevolent fund, which is in need of being rebuilt.
Those celebrating an August birthday were Kathy Miller and Thorton. A small gift was given to each.
Lunch and fellowship were shared by members and a special thank you was given to Nancy Bodrog for providing the day’s dessert.
Martin then gave the devotions, after which Rosemary Pritchard provided the blessing prior to the meal.
