Food drive scheduled for Saturday
WINTERSVILLE -- The GFWC Wintersville Woman's Club will be holding a non-perishable food drive from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Wintersville Methodist Church, located at 702 Main St.
The fundraiser will be done in a drive-through format, with volunteers collecting donations from vehicles in the church parking lot. The event is a part of the General Federation of Women's Clubs' National Day of Service, in order to raise awareness about food insecurity and hunger, club officials said.
Members are hoping to fill their trunks with donations that will be taken to a local food bank. The club is collecting new or gently-used jackets and coats, as well. The winter clothing will be donated to the Urban Mission.
Legion holding soup and sandwich sale
WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Auxiliary will hold a soup and sandwich sale from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday or until the food has been sold, in the Legion Hall, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave.
Soup selections will be chicken noodle, stuffed pepper, vegetable and wedding. The cost will be $9 for a quart, $5 for a pint and $3 for a half-pint.
An eat-in-house, 12-ounce bowl will cost $3.50.
Sandwiches will be $4 each and includes tuna, chicken, egg salad or ham salad.
All food is available for dine-in or take out. All of the money raised will be used toward helping area veterans.
Club announces bus tour
WEIRTON -- The International Senior Club has added a bus tour to its list of upcoming trips. Those interested can join in a trip to the Meadows on Oct. 23. The activity includes $20 in free play.

Schools boosts Imagination Library
WELLSBURG -- Thanks to the Brooke County Board of Education, the Brooke County Public Library has expanded the number of children who will be receiving free books through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
Launched by the famed country singer, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library Foundation provides half the cost of the books, with a local source providing the other half of the cost, according to Brooke library director Alexandra Schneider. The free books are for those between the ages of birth to 5.
Schneider stated since 2019, local funds were being provided by the Wellsburg Elks Lodge 1553, the United Way of the Upper Ohio Valley and the Brooke-Hancock Family Resource Network.
"However, the mark to fully fund the program for the estimated 1,009 eligible children under the age of 5 in Brooke County was still nowhere close to being met," she said. "And up until the start of this fiscal year, Brooke County was one of four counties that didn't have complete and sustainable funding."
Schneider said the Brooke County Board of Education agreed to provide the full local match, allowing her to accept new applications for children not currently being served. She added that without the school district's contribution, "New applications would not be able to be accepted and growth of the program would have remained at a standstill."
The West Virginia Elks continue to support the program at the state level, Schneider commented, noting she plans to continue seeking support from the school board every year.
Dungeons & Dragons classes offered
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will hold Dungeons & Dragons classes for those in middle school and high school. Daniel Melching and David Nixon will teach the class from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays. The instructors will bring everything needed for the game, officials said.

Learning toys offered at library
WELLSBURG -- Children 6 and younger are invited to the Brooke County Public Library to play with toys and games that promote hand-eye coordination and a basic understanding of science, engineering, art and math.
The sessions are from 10:30 a.m. to noon every Saturday. A parent or guardian must accompany the children, officials stated, noting the parents are encouraged to assist the children when using toys.

Pumpkin decorating contest set
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke County Public Library will be offering a pumpkin-decorating contest for those in preschool through eighth grade.
The contest is in conjunction with the Wellsburg Applefest. Pumpkins will be available Monday at the Wellsburg and Follansbee libraries, officials announced.
Participants will receive a free pumpkin, along with a bag of decorative materials to create their unique entry. Decorated pumpkins should be brought to the libraries' booth on the Wellsburg Town Square between 11 a.m. and noon Oct. 5. Winners will be announced and pumpkins can be picked up at 12:30 p.m.
