Internship awarded in Weirton

WEIRTON -- Weirton resident Matthew Jagela has received the Friends of Music's Scott Beard internship for the 2024-25 academic year. The sophomore is majoring in music at Shepherd University.
The Friends of Music created the internship in honor of Beard, a Shepherd professor of music, provost and vice president for academic affairs, who died in spring 2021. The internship is open to the school's music students interested in arts administration and affords recipients the opportunity to learn about managing and sustaining a professional arts organization by helping in the office and receiving a stipend. Support for the internship is provided by the Marion Park Lewis Foundation for the Arts, based in Winchester, Va.
Jagela is proficient in trombone, bass trombone, tuba and piano. He has performed in numerous ensembles including the ram band, wind ensemble, jazz band, orchestra, piano ensemble, trombone choir and masterworks chorale. He played with several community musical organizations, including the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra. In his junior year, he was selected for the West Virginia University honor band and honor jazz band, receiving an outstanding junior award.
He was selected for the West Virginia Region One Honor Band, the WVU honor jazz band, and the West Virginia Music Educators Association All-State Band. He received a West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Academic Achievement Award and a John Philip Sousa Award. For information about Friends of Music, visit friendswv.org.
