NEW CUMBERLAND -- President Debra Marino opened the regular meeting of the Hancock County Association of Retired School Employees on Sept. 17. The meeting took place at the Immaculate Conception Church in New Cumberland.
There were 60 members of the association in attendance and seven guests.
Marino introduced guests, led in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and grace, then thanked the Women's Guild of Immaculate Conception Church for preparing the meal.
She introduced a new association program entitled, Support Our Schools, which incorporates awareness and supports events which affect Hancock County Schools.
Dan Enich, superintendent of Hancock County Schools, discussed noteworthy topics and updated the audience on the upcoming levy and why its support is essential.
In honor of WVARSE's 67th anniversary, all mayors of Hancock County presented written proclamations, recognizing and honoring their continued generosity of service and donations given to Hancock communities.
Chester Mayor Ed Wedgewood's proclamation was accepted by Secretary Liz Pugh. New Cumberland Mayor Will White's was received by Marino. Weirton Mayor Harold Miller's was received by Earleen Jones.
Marino introduced WVARSE President Bill Milam and his wife, Darlene. Milam discussed changing the newsletter from postal to e-mail, among other topics.
Marino presented Milam with a birthday cake and song to celebrate the 67th birthday of the WVARSE Association.
Pugh read the minutes from the May meeting and Treasurer Rita Orler presented the financial report.
Community Service Chairman Michel Robinson suggested any members dressed in Halloween costumes would receive an extra door prize ticket.
Robinson thanked Sherry Emery for planning a Facebook page to represent the association.
Under new business, Marino reported the SOS project helped support bus transportation from Chester to Weirton for the Communities in Schools Backpack Project in August.
She reminded members to track their volunteer hours.
Melanie Donofe reported ideas and news received while attending meetings.
In the absence of 50/50 Chairman Rosalie Lebec, Robinson announced Donna Robinson as the drawing winner.
Robinson presented prizes to several winners.
Marino announced Gio's Restaurant will be the location for the group's next meeting, scheduled for noon Oct. 15.
Extra parking spaces will be provided, if necessary, officials stated.
The October Food Bank will be the association's monthly project.
Marino closed the meeting by reminding members to invite a friend.
