STEUBENVILLE -- Longtime aide B.J. McCartney marked a major milestone in August, as she celebrated 20 years of serving residents at the Shaffer Plaza Apartments. The Steubenville resident stated she was honored with a small party on Aug. 11 -- the anniversary of when she began her work with the Jefferson County Board of Developmental Disabilities. She was treated to 20 roses, candy and her favorite drink -- a mocha frappe. McCartney commented the years have passed by quickly.
"I was looking for a job and saw an advertisement," she recalled. "I came here and applied as a housekeeper and instead, became an aide."
She presently works with eight female residents, saying each moment has been very memorable.
"I love it," she stated. "I love coming here and hearing the ladies say, 'I'm glad you're working today.' I enjoy taking care of them. My favorite memories are of some of the things they say. Every day is just fantastic. Just coming here and taking care of them, that's going to be the biggest memory for me."
Her work entails assisting the residents with everyday living, such as providing breakfast, doing laundry and assisting with activities. During her spare time, McCartney enjoys spending time with her family, including her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. She recommends working at Shaffer Plaza, emphasizing it requires effort, but is definitely worth it.
"You have to have patience and skills to work with them, and you have to be able to talk to them," she said. "Where has the time gone? It doesn't feel like I've been here for 20 years. I'm going to be here until God says it's time to leave."
Resident Director Kassey Minor recognized McCartney for being a shining example of a loyal employee.
"It's important to recognize the dedication, hard work and loyalty that B.J. has brought to Shaffer Plaza over the last 20 years," Minor said. "I am incredibly thankful for B.J.'s kindness and helpfulness, as she is always helpful and supportive to everyone. The residents' excitement whenever she walks through the door clearly shows how much they love her and cherish her. We deeply appreciate her exceptional attendance and commitment to the residents of Shaffer Plaza and we're fortunate to have her making such a positive impact on the lives of those with developmental disabilities."
