MORGANTOWN — Scouting America’s Mountaineer Area Council and Ohio River Valley Council have merged and created one group to meet the ever-changing needs of today’s youth and carry out its mission.
Scouting America officials announced they are continuing to enhance their focus on youth programming and provide hands-on learning and educational opportunities to prepare young people with important life skills.
“Our focus continues to be on the mission of Scouting America and providing youth with meaningful experiences that help them be the best version of themselves,” said Amy Garbrick, president of the Mountaineer Area Council executive board. “Together, we will be a stronger and more sustainable organization.”
Scott Hanson, who for the past year has served as Scout executive and CEO for Scouting America Mountaineer Area Council and Ohio River Valley Council, will continue to lead this new council.
The new council operates under the Mountaineer Area Council name. Its headquarters are located in Wheeling. To best serve Scouts, leaders, volunteers and families, the council maintains its current service centers and supply shops, located in Fairmont and Wheeling.
“We have passionate, dedicated leaders and volunteers who want to see Scouting grow and prosper in our region,” said Peter Ehni, president of the Ohio River Valley Council executive board. “Combining these organizations makes us a very strong council – one that is prepared, committed and able to meet the needs of our youth.”
Staff, volunteers and others have worked to address transition needs and identify opportunities to enhance programming, while continuing their roles within the organization.
