Hot chocolate bar fundraiser set

FOLLANSBEE — Leaders and volunteers with A Child’s Place Court-Appointed Special Advocates are inviting the community to join them in celebrating its 25th anniversary.

The nonprofit organization will hold a hot chocolate bar from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Follansbee Community House.

Unlimited hot cocoa will be served in a commemorative mug for $25 by calling (304) 737-4444 in advance. A limited number of mugs will be available at the door, the cost of which will be $30, officials commented.

Proceeds will go to the group’s efforts to represent the interests of children involved in abuse and neglect cases in Brooke, Hancock and Jefferson counties.

Information will be shared with anyone interested in serving as a volunteer advocate, officials noted.

Story hour set

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library will hold an evening story hour based on “Turkey’s Valentine Surprise,” at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

There will be a craft and snacks for participants.

Class of ’58 to hold dinner

WEIRTON — The Weir High Class of ’58 will hold a dinner at Dee Jay’s restaurant in Weirton at 2 p.m. Feb. 20. Located on Three Springs Drive, all classmates are invited to attend.

Quarter auction announced

FOLLANSBEE — The Hancock County Special Olympics will hold a quarter auction March 1.

The event will be held at the Hancock County Senior Services Center, located at 547 Gas Valley Road in New Cumberland.

Doors will open at 11 a.m., with the auction to begin at noon. The cost for a paddle will be $5. Each additional paddle will be $1. Guests are encouraged to bring their quarters, officials stated.

Euchre tournament set

FOLLANSBEE — The American Legion Post No. 45 in Follansbee will hold a euchre tournament at 1 p.m. March 2. The cost will to buy in will be $10, according to organizers.

Comedian to perform

AMSTERDAM — Comedian Mickey Bell will perform at the Amsterdam Community Church of God Feb. 26.

Bell performs more than 150 shows per year, according to organizers, who said he produces a clean, high-tempo comedy act that is perfect for the entire family.

He has toured with Jason Crabb, Chonda Pierce, Mark Lowry, Unspoken and many other top acts.

Bell has released his new comedy album, “Live from the Paramount.”

Known for using his platform to advocate for mental health awareness in hopes of helping others find laughter through their pain, he will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the project to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

Officials stated, “Bell’s passion for making people laugh stems from his troubled past that he shares openly in his shows.”

“From being adopted at birth, to battling a severe bout with depression, he knows how to speak to any audience about how to bounce back in life,” officials added. “After a moral fall while serving as a pastor, Mickey found himself fired and homeless within 10 minutes. His story of recovery and finding life again will stir the emotions of anyone who has the opportunity to listen.”

Book club to meet

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library Book Club will meet in person and virtually at 5 p.m. Feb. 27 to discuss Michele Obama’s “The Light We Carry.”

Mardi Gras Gala set

FOLLANSBEE — Toni Moreland State Farm will be presenting the seventh-annual Mardi Gras Gala to support the Hilltop Montessori School from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. March 1 at the St. Francis Center, located at 805 Lee Road in Follansbee.

The evening will include New Orleans jazz, an open bar, dancing, games, auctions, a 50/50 drawing, prizes, food and fun, according to organizers. A 50/50 ticket will cost $5 or five tickets for $20. Early bird tickets can be purchased for $65 or $120 per couple.

Various levels of sponsorships are available, along with individual tickets, which can be purchased online at hilltopmontessorischool.org.

Spring dance scheduled

FOLLANSBEE — The American Legion Post No. 45 in Follansbee will host a Swing into Spring dance to benefits the Hancock County Special Olympics.

The event will take place April 5 at the Follansbee Community House. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and is being catered by Frank’s Catering.

Those attending can bring their own beverages, officials noted. Tickets are $30 per person and include live music, dinner and dancing. A Chinese auction will be held, along with a 50/50 drawing.
