Wine tasting event set

WINTERSVILLE — Those who love wine will soon have an opportunity to sample a variety of wines from various countries during the Wines Around the World event, scheduled to take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 22 at Valley Wine Cellar in Wintersville.

Presented by the Wednesdays in Wintersville Committee, the event supports the Wednesdays in Wintersville monthly street festival that takes place from May through October. Wines Around the World will feature wines and finger foods from countries such as Argentina, France, Germany, Italy and the United States.

According to Joel John, committee chairman, the cost will be $75 per person. The event will offer a dessert table which includes a variety of snacks. Each attendee will be acknowledged as a festival sponsor, which entails postings on its website.

John explained the finger foods and desserts will be supplied by local businesses. These businesses have been recruited to also contribute toward a dinner party for six, which will be the prize that will be awarded to the winner of a live auction during the evening.

“It should be a nice, elegant evening,” John stated. He noted the event will be light in tone, and each guest will be presented with a “passport” that contains information regarding the wine and food that originated from these various countries. Music will add to the evening’s ambiance, he commented.

John stated he will announce this year’s Wednesdays in Wintersville themes during the event.

A limited number of tickets are available, John said, noting 45 tickets will be sold in all. Those planning to attend should make their reservation no later than Saturday by calling (740) 264-5100.

Plans call for dry wines to be served. Anyone who prefers to sample sweeter varieties can indicate their preference when making a reservation.

Schenley Park offers new tracks

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix is ready for racing action this summer.

With the Panther Hollow Bridge closed for repairs, officials announced they are shifting gears and creating two new track events for the Vintage Weekend in Schenley Park.

“We are rerouting the vintage street race onto Overlook Drive and forming a new hillclimb event to continue the racing action to the golf course,” exclaimed competition director Joe Teplitz, who noted his enthusiasm regarding the changes.

“This represents a major enhancement to our Schenley Park offering … for both spectators and drivers,” he commented. “We’ve always considered how to incorporate the Schenley Oval into our course, and this does it. The uphill sweeping eases with Oakland and the City of Pittsburgh in the background will be spectacular” This new factor will feature two races simultaneously, promising to be the best year yet, officials said.

“Packed with technical turns and racing challenges, this dynamic circuit stays true to our tradition of vintage road racing through the heart of a city park,” Teplitz said. “Racers will paddock up on Prospect Drive and the grid will form on Hobart, as always. The start/finish line will shift to the highest section of the hill on Overlook Drive. We anticipate the same number of turns and 20 corner stations.”

Volunteers and the competition committee are working on details for all aspects of the race, including spectator areas, safety features and track access.

“The traditional track in Schenley Park was always one of the most demanding circuits in vintage racing,” he concluded. “This new Schenley Oval offers a new challenge and includes a smoother racing surface.”

The 43rd-annual motorsport festival will run from July 11-20, with the Schenley Park Race Weekend scheduled for July 19-20. The 2025 PVGP guide will include: Black Tie Gala at the Heinz History Center, July 11; Historics at Pitt Race, July 11-13; Walnut Street Invitational Car Show, July 14; Waterfront Cruise, July 15; Sewickley Stampeded and Roundup, July 15; Downtown Pittsburgh Car Display, July 16; Tune-Up at Southside Works, July 16; Countryside Tour, July 17; Grand Prix Garden Party at Phipps, July 17; and An Evening of Speed VIP and Driver Reception, July 18.
