Soup and sandwich sale planned
WELLSBURG -- The Altar and Rosary of St. John Catholic Church in Wellsburg, will hold its monthly soup and sandwich sale Wednesday at the church, located at 1300 Charles St. The event will run from 11 a.m. until the food is sold out, according to officials.
Soups will include ham and bean, beef vegetable and chicken noodle. Sandwiches will include Italian hoagies, roast beef, chicken salad croissants and barbecued ham. Assorted desserts will be available for purchase. Guests will have the option to dine in or carry out their food. To place an order, call (304) 737-8051.
Legion to hold fish fry
WEIRTON -- The Weirton American Legion Post No. 10 will hold its annual fish frys every Friday through April 11, according to Post Commander Ron Haggerty.
Haggerty explained the event will take place at the post, located at 3140 Pennsylvania Ave. in Weirton.
The fish fry is open to the public. Among the menu items to be sold are fish dinners, fish sandwiches, shrimp and cod nuggets, served with french fries and coleslaw. Various side dishes will be available, including perogies with onions and butter and macaroni and cheese. Dine-in or carryout will be available.
Easter Bunny visit to help animals
WEIRTON -- The Easter Bunny is coming to town. Pet Supplies Plus in Weirton is asking the community to hop over to the business from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday for a fun photo event. Children and pets are welcome. A $15 donation will provide guests with print and digital photos, officials stated.
All of the proceeds raised will go to the homeless animals at the Hancock County Humane Foundation.
Soup and sandwich fundraiser set
TORONTO -- Hill Top Presbyterian Church, located at 110 county Road in Toronto, will hold a soup drive through from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. March 20.
Soup will be sold by the quart for $8 and includes chicken noodle, vegetable beef, broccoli cheese or chili. Sandwiches will be $5 and will feature shredded chicken, sloppy joe and barbecued ham.
Adena to honor Vietnam veterans
ADENA -- The Vietnam War Commemoration Commemorative Partner Committee, along with the Adena American Legion Post 525 and Legion Auxiliary, will hold a national Vietnam War Veterans Day ceremonial program at 11 a.m. March 29. The event will take place on the village green in Adena, marking the war's 50th anniversary.
The program will include national Vietnam War Veterans Day recognition; recognition of surviving spouses and a bridge dedication to honor SP/4 Dale L. Stock. The objective of the program will be to thank and honor veterans of the Vietnam War. This includes personnel who were held as prisoners of war or listed as missing in action, officials stated. They will be honored for their service and sacrifice on behalf of the United States and to thank and honor these veterans' families.
All area Vietnam War veterans will be recognized and presented with a Vietnam War lapel pin. Vietnam veterans' surviving spouses of the Post will be recognized and presented with a surviving spouse lapel pin. The naming and dedication of the new town bridge will be held in honor and memory of Stock, who lost his life in Vietnam.
Scholarships available
STEUBENVILLE -- The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce has announced applications are being accepted for the Ambassador's Club 2025 Anita Jackson Scholarship. Interested parties can apply through March 31 via a Google docs form.
Two $1,000 scholarships are available for two high school seniors who are attending a school within Jefferson County.
Applicants must meet the following criteria, including a minimum grade-point average of 2.5, of which an unofficial transcript will be accepted. Students must have served at least 60 hours of community service, with "a mixture of types of community service" being recommended. School-sanctioned service does not apply, such as cleaning a stadium following a game, officials commented. Two letters of recommendation are required -- one from a current teacher and the other from a community leader. Contact the chamber for application information at (740) 282-6226.
Scholarship applications available
STEUBENVILLE -- Applications for the Lou Holtz Life Improvement Scholarship are available from school guidance counselors for seniors in the Ohio Valley who intend to attend a trade school.
The scholarship is for $3,750 for two years, and often matched by the trade school, according to officials. The application deadline will be April 4. For information, contact the Upper Ohio Valley Museum and Learning Center at the Lou Holtz Hall of Fame at (330) 386-5443.
4-H club news announced
STEUBENVILLE -- The Banner and Buckles 4-H Club met March 2 at Richmond United Presbyterian Church. Members in attendance discussed the success of their evening spent with the Wheeling Nailers.
Members from all 4-H groups came together and "had a blast," during the event, according to Banner and Buckles member Nolan Powell Scarpone. He announced the club is preparing for its annual tag pickup and a skill-a-thon event. Scarpone said this year's project books have been delivered. The next meeting of the club will take place at 5 p.m. April 6 at the church. All clubs are celebrating Ohio 4-H Week, with club members saying the community should keep an eye out for members' decorated window.
