Kiwanis trivia contest winners named

STEUBENVILLE -- Who doesn't love a good trivia competition?
Who doesn't enjoy the chance to win a cash prize just for knowing more about certain topics than your competitors do?
For the first time, the Kiwanis Club of Steubenville's 13th-annual Team Trivia Competition saw more teams compete March 8 than ever before.
According to the event's chairman, Kiwanian Tom Timmons, 20 teams signed up to participate inside the Steubenville High School Commons Area. And 20 teams showed up to see exactly who knew the most of what was being asked by the evening's master of ceremonies, Sue Busler.
Busler, Timmons' sister, explained she came up with the concept of having a trivia contest as a fundraiser for the Kiwanis Club. Despite her living with her husband, Bruce in Maryville, Ill., she faithfully travels back to Steubenville each year for this particular event. Not only does Busler ask the questions, she makes them up … creates 10 categories having 10 questions each, for a possible total of 1,000 points.
This year, Busler chose the theme Bad Jokes as her reference. For example, she quoted the joke: What did the bison say to his son when he left? The answer: Bye, son.
Bad joke. But Busler took from that and made a category called, "Don't Buffalo Me." Questions asked to those in attendance were based on a buffalo nickel, songs with the word buffalo in them, the name of a cave in France with bison on the wall and teams which have a buffalo in their name.
"When I am writing the questions, I try to come up with one for each category, such as geography, books, movies, music, history, famouse people and sports," Busler said. She said her bonus questions were more difficult this year and were worth three points, rather than one point.
Last year, the top three teams were separated by less than one point, officials stated. This year, it was Busler's hope to allow a little more leeway, should teams be that close again.
The Pride of the Red Knights from T-Town was last year's winning team. Members returned to the trivia night looking for another win. This year's team was made up of Carmen Lucas, Shawn Lucas, Kara Cremonese, Donna Twyford, Abbie Twyford Wilson, Mickey Cope, Jane Shockey, Fred Burns, Jim Orsini and Kathleen Nail.
Most of the players are return members of the team. Carmen Lucas explained the team has takenthird place three times, took second place twice and won last year.
All of the members said they practice at home by watching "Jeopardy!" or doing New York Times puzzles and reading." It's our Super Bowl for families," Donna Twyford added, to which her team laughed and said, "We do have a lot of fun and are here to defend our title."
However, the team from T-Town was not able to make it into this year's top three. But there's always next year. This year's winning team was Check Your Head. The second-place team was Mingo Windians and third place went to Starkdale Presbyterian Church.
"The 13th-annual Kiwanis trivia event is now in the books," Timmons stated. "The third-place team of Starkdale Presbyterian Church fell just one point shy of second place, which was claimed by the team from Mingo Junction, the Mingo Windians."
Timmons said last year's third-place finisher, Check Your Head, studied hard for 12 months and earned first place by a nice margin.
"Sue kept participants on their toes throughout the event, and we held a silent auction and a live auction with items that were a big hit," Timmons concluded. "It really helped make the night a great success."
