Legion donates to Garfield pupils

The American Legion Argonne Post 33 presented a $5,000 check to Garfield Elementary School Tuesday afternoon. According to Joe Holliday, service officer for the Legion, the donation was presented to the Steubenville school to assist pupils with their needs. He stated the Legion’s officers decide on which recipients will receive the contributions, noting the Legion tries to keep the gifts local and in-town. Holliday said when the Legion has some surplus money, they want to give it to a community organization or nonprofit in need. Those taking part in the check presentation at the Post included, from left, front, Arsyn Skinner, Robert Jackson, Olivia Geary, Salise Felton, Dontay McShan and John Wise; second row, Principal Tricia Saccoccia, Chyna Wise, Miracle McGee and Daphane Andrews; and back, Trustee Kenny Walter, First Vice President Terry Channel, Commander Joe Rockey and Holliday. Saccoccia noted her appreciation to the Legion, saying the school will use the donation toward shoes, clothing and uniforms for the students, put some aside for the end-of-the-year party and allow some to be used for incentives the school gives to students in their reading goals.
