STEUBENVILLE — Steubenville High School students are on the path to success with 64 graduates expected to receive degrees through the College Credit Plus program in May.

Gifted Director Jackie Reeves said for the first time, 25 seniors will receive two degrees, while one will obtain three degrees. She noted the transition from Eastern Gateway Community College to Belmont College, saying the program has run smoothly.

“We have 64 students receiving an associate of arts, and 25 additionally getting an associate of science,” Reeves said. “Alaina Vrable is graduating with an associate of arts, associate of science and medical coding degrees. This is the first time we’ve had double degrees.” She added this was “a huge year” because students who held a 3.0 grade-point average did not have to test due to COVID.

“It’s a spectacular class and they do really well,” she said, noting there were significant benefits to the CCP program.

“It’s a huge money saver and they can usually save between $20,000 to $60,000, depending on their academic institution,” she commented. “Overall, the main benefit is they take college courses with us and it takes away the fear of freshman year.”

Two online courses are offered through Belmont College, as well as Steubenville High teachers who meet the requirements to lead classes. The students never have to leave the campus, which eases their transition into college life.

“Some kids have upward of 70-90 credits,” Reeves said.

Vrable said CCP has given her the tools to prepare for the future.

“The College Credit Plus program offered at Steubenville High School has given me the opportunity to earn three degrees during my four years,” she stated. “It has not only challenged me academically, but has provided me with the life skills needed to be successful in my future endeavors. This would not have been possible without the support of Mrs. Reeves and the outstanding educators and staff at SHS to guide me along the way.”
