TORONTO -- Members of the Toronto Senior Citizens group met for their monthly meeting March 20 at the Karaffa Recreation Center.
Chaplain Arlene Obertance-Rice provided the blessing prior to a St. Patricks' Day-themed dinner being served.
The meal consisted of corned beef, cabbage, mashed potatoes, rolls and apple crisp.
Toronto resident Tim Starr and Fire Cpt. Ryan Boyd spoke to those in attendance about gaining support for the pending bond bill to replace the city's aging fire trucks.
The vote will be held May 6. Members acknowledged the need for new equipment and applauded the work of the fire department, which had dealt with "a significant brush fire just the day before."
Obertance-Rice began the meeting with a reading of "Knowing It's Spring Again," after which those gathered recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
President John Livingstone called on officers for their reports.
Treasurer Patty Smith provided the financial report.
Social Secretary Peggy Ziarko thanked the kitchen committee and announced those members who are celebrating a birthday or a wedding anniversary during March.
Ziarko provided the names of members who are sick or in the hospital.
Under new business, officials noted there are two trips being planned, including a five-day trip to Lancaster, Pa., in May, and a day trip to Sugarcreek for lunch and a Neil Diamond tribute show.
Following adjournment, members paricipated in a few games of bingo.
The $25 bingo winners were Andy Snyder, Glenda Matheson and Joann Lewellyn. Virginia Dafoe won the cover all worth $30.
The 50/50 drawing worth $119 was won by Phyllis Koloppajlo.
The basket drawing, which included $30 in scratch-off lottery tickets, was won by Karen Krause.
There were 10 door prize winners and one additional prize of an Easter wreath made and donated by Bonnie Ewing.
Due to the Easter Holy Week celebrations, the April meeting has been canceled, with members reconvening in May.
