4-H clubs learn kitchen tasks

The Ohio State Extension Office held a cooking clinic for Jefferson County 4-H clubs and Cloverbuds. Snap Ed educator Audrey Haught taught measurements by using teaspoons, tablespoons and dry and liquid measuring cups. She demonstrated how to measure flour and allowed participants to experiment. Members learned about doubling and tripling recipes, how to figure out how many cups are needed in a recipe, how to use the My Plate Chart and the importance of eating healthy by using food groups when preparing meals. Leslie Aftanas, 4-H program assistant, taught members how to make Italian seasoning using only the spices on hand. Free seeds to start their own herb garden at home were distributed. Maddison Zeroski, Olivia Dudley and Joseph Taylor helped Aftanas discuss some of the 15 different cooking projects available in 4-H. At the end of the evening, club members and their parents were able to make their own whole wheat English muffin pizzas, made with fresh spinach, Italian seasoning, shredded zucchini, mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce.
