SHS to learn mental fitness

STEUBENVILLE — Students at Steubenville High School will have the opportunity to learn about mental fitness through a lecture planned at noon Wednesday inside the auditorium. Steve Wize, president and founder of Mental Fitness, LLC, will speak.

SHS Principal Ted Gorman said the session will not be a full school assembly. Wize will address a smaller group of students, he noted.

“Steve has appeared at Steubenville High School before and talks about depression, anxiety and stress students go through,” Gorman explained. “Kids don’t realize others are going through the same struggles. They think it’s in isolation, but that’s not the case.”

Wize has appeared in schools, and works with companies and individuals as a Pennsylvania-based licensed clinical social worker, an executive life coach and as a professional speaker. He has operated a private practice for seven years and designed the curriculum to create his business. He has authored the books “Mental Fitness: A 12-Week Guide to Become Mentally Fit,” and “Personal Journal,” the latter of which helps to establish a positive mindset and develop a sustained, mental well-being.

Wize uses a solution-focused approach to help people master their mental fitness and achieve their full potential.

Gorman stated a mental health course is being created at the school, with students to use Wize’s resources inside the class.

“We’re looking at having a mental health class,” Gorman commented. “He will provide the materials and we will have a teacher undergo training.” He noted this will most likely happen next year.
