Legion to hold flag disposal
BRILLIANT — In recognition of Flag Day, Brilliant American Legion Post 573 will hold its annual flag disposal ceremony at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Post, located at 210 Market St. in Brilliant. The public is invited to attend the demonstration and learn the proper procedure for disposing of a worn, faded, torn or soiled American Flag, officials commented.
“If you have never witnessed the ceremony for disposal of worn flags, you are encouraged to come out and watch,” Legion officials stated. “The ceremony stands as a reminder of what the United States flag truly stands for.”
The ceremony for the disposal of unserviceable flags was passed in September 1937 in New York by the 19th National Convention of the American Legion, as outlined in Resolution No. 440. The ceremony has been an integral part of American Legion ritual since that date. The Legion adopted the ceremony to encourage proper respect for the flag and to provide for its disposal in a dignified manner. Those with worn, faded, torn or soiled flags, are encouraged to bring them to the Post. A receptacle is located near the back entrance. The flags will be properly disposed of during the ceremony.
