Fidelis Gamma holds meeting

WEIRTON — The Fidelis Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa International Honorary Organization for Women Educators met at Eat ‘n Park May 1.

Chapter President Susan Cullinan presided over the 15 members and one guest in attendance.

Membership Chairman Ruth Fuller introduced the day’s guest, prospective member Jeannie Barrett.

Fuller also provided Barrett’s educational and personal biography.

Chaplain Elaine McClung led in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and read the thought of the day entitled, “Waiting for Perfection.”

McClung then provided grace prior to the meal.

The April minutes were read by Recording Secretary Margaret Polk.

Corresponding Secretary Eileen Snyder reported she sent six thinking-of-you cards, one get-well card and birthday cards to eight members who celebrated birthdays between Jan. 31 and May 17.

Standing committee reports were presented to the chapter, beginning with an altruistic report form being circulated for the month of April.

It was reported that in March, there were 87 hours of service, along with monetary donations in the amount of $530 given in the name of Alpha Delta Kappa.

Members noted there were $600 in non-monetary donations given.

Publicity Chair Nancy Conley reported she submitted an article about April’s meeting to the local paper.

Scholarship Committee Chairman Liz Pugh reported the applicant chosen had an impressive background in academics, social and community activities. She will be attending West Liberty University with a major in speech and minor in special education. The winner and her mother have been invited to attend the chapter’s June meeting.

Under old business, it was announced the December Tri-Chapter luncheon will be held at noon on Dec. 6 at Nio’s Restaurant.

Attending members were asked to think about how the group’s scholarship can be used in the event there are no applicants who select education as their field of study.

The matter is to be discussed during the June meeting.

Members attending the Spring Celebration along with Cullinan were Snyder, Carolyn Allison and Fuller.

Under new business, plans are being made for the Tri-Chapter luncheon. Conley was appointed to select the location for the event. Fuller and Allison will create and send out a save the date for the group’s two sister chapters.

Cullinan said she would create a wreath to donate toward a drawing. Donna Durkin moved that the chapter members provide gift cards to be placed on the wreath. Snyder seconded the motion, which passed after a discussion.

She then introduced an idea for individual favors.

Recognition was given to Shirley Washam, Polk and Nancy Holdsworth for being the chapter’s May hostesses.

The meeting was adjourned with the singing of “The Lamp of Alpha Delta Kappa.”
