School to hold rummage sale

WEIRTON — St. Joseph the Worker School, located across from Madonna High Schoo in Weirton, will hold its annual rummage and garage sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The sale will take place in the school’s gymnasium. Gently-used merchandise will be for sale, including housewares, collectibles, crystal and glassware, dishes, furniture, vintage items, toys and sporting goods.

Officials stated the prices are set reasonably and something will be available for people of all ages.

Craft class to be offered

WELLSBURG — The Brooke County Public Library will hold a craft class, featuring diamond painting keychains, at 11 a.m. on July 31.

The class is for young adults and adults.

Senior center to hold dance

WEIRTON — The Greater Weirton Senior Center will hold its next dance from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 7 at the center, located at 3425 Main St. in Weirton.

The event is open to the public, according to officials.

The cost is $10 for singles and $15 for couples. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish to share with guests, with the main dish to be provided by the center.

Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. A 50/50 drawing will be held and music will be provided by an area musician.

Pittsburgh Theater offers free courses

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Public Theater will hold free workforce sessions throughout the month of August. According to officials, sessions are open to anyone 18 years of age and older.

Learn from industry experts and expand your understanding of what it takes to make theatrical magic happen.

A course for set design entitled How Spaces Tell Stories with Sasha Schwartz, has been scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 9.

The class will provide an interactive overview of a set design process for theater, from script analysis and research, to scale model ideation and storyboarding.

Participants will learn to prioritize hands-on artistic exploration, design as an empathetic practice and discover a collaborative and mixed-media approach to theatrical storytelling.

A crash course entitled Hatmaking for the Enthusiast with Brian Russman, will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 16.

The class will introduce participants to the breadth of possibilities in the millinery arts. A discussion about ways of creating, decorating and finishing headwear will be sprinkled throughout the day-long experience.

Participants will do a deep dive into blocked straw. Each member will leave with a finished product.

The course From Concept to Curtain: The Essentials of Theatrical Management and Production with Matthew Torbett, will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 23.

This one-day workshop will explore theatrical costume production from the standpoint of management, discussing topics such as clean paperwork, effective budgeting, material procuring and team leadership.

Best practices for fittings and operations will be discussed.

The course will feature interactive lectures and hands-on activities, providing participants with knowledge and hard skills to be able to more effectively pursue a career in costume administration.

Those interested can register for one or all of the classes being offered, officials noted. Space for each class is limited, so those who would like to join should register for a spot in the free program.

Wild Harvest Academy offered

CADIZ — Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or just beginning your journey into foraging in the outdoors, the Wild Harvest Academy promises a day of discovery, connection and appreciation for Ohio’s wild resources.

A hands-on learning experience will be offered at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 22 in Harrison County.

The Harrison Soil and Water Conservation District, along with the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District and the Ohio State University Extension office, will hold this scenic event, which will offer sessions that explore Ohio’s wild bounty.

From sustainable harvesting and edible plant foraging, to mushroom identification, fly fishing and more, those attending the one-day academy will gain practical skills and ecological insights from experts in the field.

Talks, guided walks and live demonstrations will help connect guests with nature and deepen their understanding of Ohio’s wild resources, officials explained.

Participants will choose from a variety of concurrent sessions, covering topics such as edible trees, wild mushrooms, filleting fresh-caught fish, whitetail deer field dressing, fly fishing techniques, foraging for edible plants and pawpaws.

Coffee and refreshments will kick off the event, followed by a welcome and introduction to the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Wildlife’s mobile kitchen will be on site with samples, officials noted. The cost will be $20 per person.
