Independence Hall receives award

In recognition for its role in the founding of the 35th state to join the Union, on June 20, 1863, members of the Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable presented its History and Heritage Award to West Virginia’s Independence Hall in Wheeling. Taking part in the ceremony were, from left, Jeanne Feinstein, treasurer; Roger Micker, president; Debbie Jones, manager of Wheeling’s Independence Hall; Wendy Elswick, secretary; and Steve Suhler, editor of the roundtable’s newsletter. Completed as a federal customs house in 1858, the hall’s court room, offices and post office are meticulously preserved, members commented. The building displays Civil War regimental battle flags, historical documents and artifacts. The roundtable’ s History and Heritage award is designed to recognize the efforts and endeavors of a group or individual which promotes and encourages interest in Civil War history. Anyone interested in nominating an individual or group in your community who reflects these ideas, can contact Roger Micker at (304) 312-7559.
