City schools begin pre-year events

STEUBENVILLE — Exactly one week from today, students in the Steubenville City School District will be inside their classrooms to begin another school year. In the meantime, however, the district will hold a few upcoming events as a preview for the start of the new academic year.

Those attending Steubenville High School can receive their schedules on assigned days based on grades. Seniors can receive their schedules between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. today. Juniors can receive their schedules from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday. Sophomores can pick up their schedules from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, while freshmen are invited to get theirs during orientation on Wednesday.

Principal Aaron Newman said incoming ninth-graders can obtain their schedules from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday in the high school commons, after which orientation will take place inside the auditorium. Students will ten return to the commons area to take part in the Back-to-School Bash, set to begin at 5 p.m.

“Generally speaking, freshman are eager to see their first high school schedule,” Newman commented. “During the orientation component of the event, our students get an overview of policies, procedures and common practices at SHS. We cover everything from the drop-off and pick-up locations to bell schedules and extra-curricular offerings.”

“The leadership team’s presentation is designed to answer frequently-asked questions, while exposing students to important cultural features of SHS,” Newman continued. “Mainstay programs such as our Freshman Success Academy and our PBIS theme of Big Red PRIDE, set the backdrop to our unique, vibrant school culture. Students and parents will have the chance to ‘walk their schedule’ and find their classrooms at various points throughout the evening.”

Newman noted the freshmen event has yielded a high turnout, with about 90 percent of students and parents attending.

“The purpose of the event is to provide important information about Steubenville High School to our incoming freshmen and their families,” Newman concluded.

Activities are set for those at Harding Middle School, with orientation scheduled for today and Wednesday. Fifth-graders will attend orientation at 9 a.m. today and seventh-graders will attend at 12:30 p.m. today. Sixth-grade students will participate at 9 a.m. Wednesday, and eighth-graders will go through orientation at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Those at McKinley STEM Academy will conduct a uniform exchange from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday in the school’s gymnasium. An open house will take place from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday.

Pupils attending Wells Academy, Pugliese West and East Garfield Elementary schools will have an opportunity to visit their respective open houses on Monday. Pupils can view their building and meet their teachers. The event will be held at Wells Academy from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Pugliese West pupils will attend from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. East Garfield pupils will have open house from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
