MALVERN — The 44th-annual Great Trail Festival and Farm Market will make its return to Malvern, offering two full weekends of old-time entertainment and activities.

The event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 23-24 and Aug. 30-Sept. 1. Among the activities will be a recreation of the French and Indian era near the Great Indian Trail. Selected artisans and marketplace crafters will offer 18th-century crafts of distinction, as well as an opportunity to acquire fine leatherwork, handwrought pottery, fragrant herbals, florals and primitive folk art.

Visitors can watch fancy spinning, weaving, quilting and basketry, or view the making of instruments, old-fashioned soap, woodworking, wood carvers, flintknappers, silversmiths and blacksmiths.

The Appalachian Musicians will provide the music. Scottish pipers, show fiddlers, clog dancing and folk music will entertain audiences, officials commented.

Guests will see the items that are needed to live a frontier life. On site will be buckskin buckskinners, fur trappers and blanket traders displaying their merchandise. There will be open campfires, teepee lodges, cannon firings and tomahawk throwing.

The State of Ohio Tomahawk Throwing Championship will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 1.

A unique variety of savory foods will be available for purchase, including ham and bean soup, johnnycakes, buffalo burgers, Indian fry bread, hot apple dumplings, funnel cakes, copper kettle popcorn, roasted almonds, homemade nut rolls, pumpkin rolls and ice cream.

The Great Trail Festival Grounds are located on state Route 43 at 6331 Canton Road in Malvern. The cost of admission will be $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for youth ages 12-18 and free for children under 12.

No pets are permitted. Bus tours are welcome and will receive group rates, officials noted. Acres of free parking is available.
