STEUBENVILLE — The Sycamore Youth Center held its annual training for volunteers and staff members on Saturday, with approximately 50 leaders gathering to prepare for another season of after-school classes.
This year’s training focused on equipping volunteers with effective ways in which to reach area children, including education pertaining to life skills and God’s love and grace.
The event was organized by Sycamore’s Michelle Clum, with the keynote speaker being Sycamore Executive Director Bobbyjon Bauman.
“Our goal is to meet kids where they are — with encouragement, compassion and practical skills that will help them succeed in life,” Bauman shared during his remarks.
This fall, the center is offering 64 free after-school classes, running Monday through Saturday. Classes began Monday, covering a wide range of subjects, including art, dance, music, STEM, tutoring, sports, financial literacy and leadership training. All programs are provided at no cost to students in the Ohio Valley.
In addition to the programming at the Sycamore center, the organization partners with Indian Creek Middle School to operate the ICMS Sycamore Stars After-School Program, giving students additional opportunities for academic support and enrichment, Bauman noted.
Parents who are interested in enrolling their children in Sycamore’s after-school programs can visit sycamorecenter.com for class listings and registration information.
The center is a ministry of the Ohio Valley Youth Network, serving more than 500 kindergarten- through 12th-grade students weekly.
It offers a safe, faith-based environment where children can grow academically, socially and spiritually, officials said.
