STEUBENVILLE — The Sycamore Youth Center will host a community-wide 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance event, set to take place from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13.
The event is to bring together more than 100 local youth volunteers in a day dedicated to honoring the spirit of service and sacrifice shown by Americans in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.
Under the leadership of Sycamore Executive Director Bobbyjon Bauman and Sycamore Program Director Kristi Shores, students from local Key Clubs and Leo Clubs will donate their time and talents to two service projects. Volunteers will engage in painting and maintenance efforts at the Sycamore Youth Center, while additional teams will work on landscaping and beautification efforts at the Aim Women’s Center’s Mother of Mercy Home, a safe haven for women and children in need.
“This day is more than just a memorial — it’s a call to action,” Bauman said. “Our youth are stepping up to serve in meaningful ways that strengthen our community and reflect the courage and compassion shown by our nation’s heroes on 9/11.”
Following the day’s activities, a 9/11 remembrance ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Historic Fort Steuben green space near the Visitor’s Center.
The ceremony will include patriotic performances and tributes by youth throughout the community.
Featured participants include the Rev. Tony Foglio, who will deliver a keynote message on the legacy of 9/11; Evan Conn, an eighth-grade musician from Indian Creek Middle School; Natalie Armstrong, the overall vocal winner of Valley’s Got Talent; and Destiny Angelucci, 2025 champion of Valley’s Got Talent Kids Edition.
The event, funded in part by a grant from Youth Service America, is titled “Together We Serve: Honoring Heroes Through Art, Service and Renewal.”
The program aims to engage youth in tangible service and creative reflection to commemorate the lives lost and the resilience shown in the face of tragedy, Bauman stated.
Youth volunteers helped plan the event, designed art pieces, led service teams and coordinated the remembrance ceremony.
