Auditions open for Valley’s Got Talent

STEUBENVILLE — Are you someone who is talented in the arts of singing or playing an instrument? Are you between the ages of 13 and 23? If the answers to the first two questions were “yes,” then perhaps the upcoming event would be perfect for you.

The annual Valley’s Got Talent showcase is now accepting applications for this year’s contest, which has been scheduled for 4 p.m. on Nov. 23 inside the Steubenville High School auditorium.

Hosted by the Sycamore Youth Center and Ohio Valley Youth Network, the nonprofits have announced upcoming audition times and dates.

According to Bobbyjon Bauman, president of the OVYN and executive director of Sycamore, contestants must live within a 35-mile radius of Steubenville and be talented in the areas of dance, music, performance or creative expression.

Bands, choirs or solists can include accompanying adults, but only performers ages 13-23 will be judged.

More than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded, including a $500 grand prize, $100 for each first-place category winner and $25 for each second-place category winner.

Performance categories include: Vocal group, vocal soloist, vocal soloist with instrument, dance group, dance soloist, dance duet or trio, original songwriter, praise band or choir, instrumentalist or miscellaneous.

All songs and performances must have a Christian-based or sacred message, according to Bauman. Lyrics or content needs to be sumitted for approval when registering.

The Ohio Valley Youth Network screening committee will review all entries to ensure they reflect positive, faith-centered themes, he added.

Those interested in being a contestant can audition online or in-person at one of the following tryout events: Steubenville Catholic Central High School, 2:45 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Nov. 4; Steubenville High School, 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. Nov. 6; Edison High School, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13; and the Sycamore Youth Center, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 15.

Those who cannot make it to the in-person tryouts can submit an online audition by 11:59 p.m. Nov. 15. Songs or performances must be 5 minutes or less.

Songs must be submitted through YouTube, an e-mail link or a video link that can accessed on the internet, officials stated. Online entries must be submitted to Bauman by e-mail at bobbyjonbauman@gmail.com.

Judging criteria includes spiritual or inspirational effectiveness, vocal or instrumental excellence and presentation or the ability to engage and connect with the audience.

Finalists will be notified on Nov. 16. Approximately 20 acts will be selected, five per category, and advance to perform in the finals, which can be viewed at the SHS auditorium or live through Facebook or Comcast cable on the Steubenville City Schools channel.
