Dog contest set for Saturday

STEUBENVILLE — The David M. Lucas Dog Park will host its first Canine Fall Festival from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the dog park, located behind the health department on state Route 331 off of Exit 213 on I-70. The festival is for the entire family and will feature food trucks and a wide selection of vendors selling items and inflatable play stations for children.

At 2 p.m. the dog costume contest will commence, with judging done by D.K. Wright and Francesca Carinci, who will select winners in the following categories: Most original, funniest, scariest and best owner/dog costume combination. Attendees can vote for the overall best winner. Ribbons will be awarded. A fetch 50/50 drawing will take place. Guests will pay for numbered tennis balls and a dog will pick the winner. Balls are $5 for 1, $10 for three and $20 for six.

“It’s a great way to spend a beautiful fall day outside with your dogs and family, while helping to raise money for the ongoing maintenance of the dog park and adjacent areas,” stated Dave Lucas, the park’s namesake. “We wanted to offer people a chance to participate in our annual dog costume contest, while offering additional activities to appeal to the whole family. There is something for everyone, whether you have a dog or not.”

“We would like to build on this event each year”, noted organization Secretary Sherri VanTassel. “We are still waiting to see if we will be awarded the newest Natureworks Grant to enhance the dog park and add a modern, accessible and skill-building playground. If so, this gorgeous Fox Shannon Park will become a hub of activities.”

Belmont County commissioners were thanked for their support, along with attorney Carinci for being the festival’s named sponsor.
