WEIRTON — The calendar can be a strange and wondrous thing.
One day, you see it as just a number. The next, it is a solemn reminder of something greater, something that requires society to stop for a moment and pause … and remember.
For members of the International Senior Club, that day came on Nov. 11.
Gathered for their monthly meeting at Undo’s Restaurant in Weirton, friendly chatter soon gave way to quiet reflection as club members heard from President Regina Truax.
Truax addressed this important date, as depicted on the calendar.
She explained how this was more than just a typical meeting — that this was a day of significance — that this was Veterans Day.
Truax didn’t just make a passing remark. Instead, the president acknowledged those who have served in the United States military. The club’s veterans.
Four men, three in the Navy and one in the Marines, were recognized. They included Dino Rossi, James Cerra and Terry Ramsey, of the navy; and Gabriel Arlia, a proud Marine.
This portion of the meeting, however, was not just a moment for the club to express its gratitude. It was an opportunity for the veterans’ peers to thank them for their service, their sacrifice.
But those words of appreciation did not stop there. Club member Liz Beecroft provided a tribute through the reciting of a poem to honor not only those veterans in attendance, but veterans from all across the United States, past and present.
Sometimes, the most powerful words are the ones which are spoken from the heart. Sometimes, they are the words which are said during the middle of a regular Tuesday afternoon.
And as the four veterans stood side by side, having their photo taken with one another, it was not a matter of pomp and circumstance. This was a day which was felt by everyone who was sitting inside that room at Undo’s.
Because sometimes, all it takes is a community coming together and simply saying, “Thank you” to those who are deserving to remember what the day truly stands for.
Following the recognition of veterans, the seniors continued their meeting with Carl Truax leading the group in prayer. He then provided the blessing, said prior to the evening’s meal which consisted of a buffet-style dinner and dessert.
Larry Purks led in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, after which members sang “God Bless America.”
The newest club members were introduced by Beecroft. The newest additions include Richard Margan, Liliam Zoros, Shelia Golonka, Marcia Golonka, Ruth Masters, Carla Stevens, Renea Kondhe and Pat Dailey.
Beecroft introduced those who served as guests for the evening, including Delores King, Cheryl Thompson, Joyce Destefano, Cathy DiBenedetto and Joe DiBenedetto.
Secretary Rita Orler read the minutes from the previous meeting, which were approved.
Treasurer Norma Henson presented the treasurer’s report, which was approved and filed for audit.
Club officials announced canned goods are still being collected for the Salvation Army. All donations will be delivered to the nonprofit by Arlia, and distributed to those in need throughout the holiday season.
Truax announced there will be one more bus trip taking place this year for anyone who is still interested in signing up. All of the tours are open to the public.
Participants will be going to the Capital Theater in Wheeling to see A Motown Christmas on Dec. 13.
