Sunrise seniors discuss kitchen committees

TORONTO — Members of the Toronto Sunrise Seniors met Jan. 9, with President Barbara Pritts welcoming those in attendance, including guest Mary Bigler.

Co-Chaplain Mary Lou Emery provided the blessing prior to the meal which featured chicken, cabbage rolls and a variety of side dishes.

The group thanked the kitchen committee comprised of Hank and Laura Sheets, Lori Gorney and several volunteers, who received a round of applause from diners.

Following dinner, the meeting reopened, with attendees hearing the minutes from the Nov. 14 meeting read by Secretary Karen Martin. Martin provided a summary of minutes from the Dec. 12 Christmas banquet and read a thank-you note from the co-chairs of the Toys for Toronto program.

Donations to the program helped 75 families during the Christmas season.

Treasurer Lynn Miller gave the financial report, which was filed for audit.

Pritts distributed membership and kitchen committee lists to anyone needing a copy. She discussed and posted the responsibilities of the kitchen committee and reminded members if Toronto City Schools are canceled on the day of the group’s meeting, the meeting will be canceled as well. However, if schools are on a two-hour delay, meetings will be held as usual.

Social Secretary Mary Ann Landerfield announced those who celebrate a birthday in January.

Because of the high cost of postage, the group voted to distribute birthday cards during the first monthly meeting. If a member is not present, the card will be mailed, along with any get-well cards, Landerfield said.

Donna Farmer was recognized as member of the month. Farmer said she has found happiness by being a friend to everyone and jokes when someone wins bingo prize money by saying “I am your friend.” The activity for the evening involved finding hidden objects in a group of skiing bears.

Jackie Porter, Bea Lytle, Dora Oiler and Mary Ann Cordier were awarded prizes for their sleuthing skills.

Don Pritts sold tickets for the 50/50 drawing. The winners were Nancy Bodrog and Marlene Garrett.

The meeting concluded with announcements and brag time.

Riverview Global Methodist Church, located at 105 N. River Ave., will hold a Souper Bowl luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 8. The public is invited to attend.

Soup, sandwiches and desserts will be available for dine-in or carryout. Donations will be accepted. Following a closing joke, the meeting was adjourned.

Members stayed to play bingo. Winners included Patty Losey, Estrella Hess, Pritts, Candi Murphy, Sheets, Bodrog, Farmer, Brenda Fetty and Bigler.

The next meeting will be held Friday. Any Ohio resident 55 or older is welcome to attend.
