Sycamore accepting winter/spring class signups

STEUBENVILLE — The Sycamore Youth Center has announced registration is open for after-school classes for the winter and spring semester.

Classes run from Jan. 26 through May 1, with courses offered to students in first through 12th grade. This year, there are 64 free after-school classes.

Parents are encouraged to register their child as soon as possible to ensure a spot and help spread the word to others who could benefit from these opportunities. The preferred method to register is online, by visiting sycamorecenter.com/classes.

Transportation is available for many students; however, transportation details vary by school and grade level, officials stated, adding families should check the online sign-up form or the form available at the child’s school regarding transportation information.

Elementary school families of students attending East Garfield, Wells Academy and McKinley STEM Academy must complete the sign-up form available in the school office to receive permission to be transported from the school to the Sycamore center.

Classes available to fifth- and sixth-graders between the hours of 3 p.m. and 4:20 p.m. on Mondays include: Boys Bible Study, 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Girls Bible Study, 3 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.; board games/chess, She Rises!, basketball skills, automotive, cooking, cosmetology, including hair, makeup and nails; computer lab, pyrography/wood burning art; hip hop dance and entrepreneurship/financial literacy.

The Sycamore Classical Choir will meet for those in grades third through 12 on Mondays, although times can vary. Another class being offered on Mondays will be the Sycamore Children’s International Folk Dancing class for those in grades third through eighth.

Those in grades first through fourth attending Wells Academy, Pugliese West and McKinley STEM Academy can sign up for the following classes, which are available between 2:45 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. Classes include the Sonshine Bible Club, martial arts, Scout Reach or Scouting America program, sewing, art, cooking, Storytime, computer lab, indoor and outdoor games and a LEGO class.

East Garfield Elementary pupils in third and fourth grade can select from the following classes being offered from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays: Sonshine Bible Club, worship dance, faith and fitness, art, geography, board games/chess, LEGO class, cool kid code, ceramics through Spyridon Studios, cooking, computer coding through Boys and Girls Who Code, Storytime and indoor and outdoor games. Additional Wednesday programs include Recreational International Folk Dance for fifth-graders through adults, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.; and Drama for Young Adults between the ages of 14 and 24, with times to vary.

Those in seventh through 12 grades will have an opportunity to enroll in a Thursday class, running from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and selecting from the following: Boys Bible Study, Girls Bible Study, entrepreneurship, billiards, chess, sacred art iconography for 15 students and hip hop dance.

On Fridays, first- and second-graders attending East Garfield Elementary can select from the following classes, which run from 2 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.: Sonshine Bible Club, LEGO class, ballet, art, Storytime, recycled art, cooking, indoor games and outdoor games.

On Saturdays, Sycamore will offer classes and specialty programs for the following: Tumbling, cosmetology through the Legal Hair Salon program, cooking, basketball skills, She Rises!, chill and chat, offered the first Thursday of the month; advanced youth folk dancing, ballroom dancing for ages 12 through 18, Drama for Young Performers, ages 8 to 14; orchestra and free tutoring through the Indian Creek Middle School Sycamore Stars.
