Top Toronto spellers

Braxton Zeigler, a fifth-grader at Toronto Elementary School, placed first in the Toronto City School District Spelling Bee, held Tuesday at Toronto Junior-Senior High School. Zeigler correctly spelled “scooter,” a noun meaning a vehicle ridden usually while standing that consists of a narrow footboard mounted between or atop two wheels tandem, that has an upright steering handle attached to the front wheel, and that is moved by pushing with one foot, to claim the win. Taking part in the awards ceremony were, from left, Zeigler; Caraline Cooper, a fifth-grader at Toronto Elementary School, second; Isabella Fontaine, a sixth-grader at Toronto Junior-Senior High School, third; Grayson Mader, a fifth-grader at Toronto Elementary School, fourth; Mara Keenan, a sixth-grader at Toronto Junior-Senior High School, fifth; and Landon Danko, an eighth-grader at Toronto Junior-Senior High School, alternate. The top five spellers and alternate will advance to the Jefferson-Harrison County Regional Spelling Bee, presented by the Herald-Star, at 11 a.m. March 14 at Buckeye North Elementary School in Brilliant.
